Contemporary glass art displayed in artist's workshop. Joe, who won the third prize in the Baines Surrey Artist of the Year 2011, enjoys combining glass with other media, such as wood, different kinds of metal and ceramic.
How did winning last year's SAOS bursary help you and what have you been up to this past year?
I was very pleased to receive the bursary as it meant I was able to invest in some new equipment, namely a welding machine. I have started making garden sculptures: I myself make the steel frames and insert stained glass in them.
How did the last years open studios summer event go for you? How did you find it?
Last summer's SAOS has been the best for me since I did my first in 2010. I had 222 visitors in my studio and sales were really good, too. I've had quite a few commissions, as well.
I was also very pleased to be voted into the Baines Surrey Artist of the Year exhibition at the New Ashgate Gallery in Farnham by the public for the third time, where two bigger pieces of my work on display were sold.
Most recently, I have done the Christmas open studios which went well, too.
What would you say to those thinking about doing the summer open studios in June?
I really love doing the open studios: it is fantastic to meet people who are interested in local artists' work. If it hadn't been for SAOS, I would have found establishing myself as an artist/maker in Surrey much more difficult. SAOS is a name that more and more people are familiar with and the open studios in June is an event that a lot of people look forward to every year now. I am already looking forward to this year's SAOS events.
Thankyou Joe, we look forward to seeing you at the open studio event in June!
