I have a fascination with what you cannot see as much as what you can see in the places and people we encounter. Researching the history of a place and the people that have inhabited it I repeatedly draw and paint a landscape as a framework for abstract painting in the studio. Working from simple sketches and memory I create an emotional and gestural response to the subject aiming to harness the energy of those final marks and the accidental. The imperfections of the surface and the broken edge of the finished piece is key to this process, like the character flaws in people it captures the spirit of what lies beneath.
