Christine Layton

Cabinet maker

I had a complete change of career in 2010 after taking voluntary redundancy from an insurance company. I trained as a cabinet maker with a well known cabinet maker in deepest Sussex. I had never done anyting like it before and was completely out of my comfort zone for several weeks, but I loved every minute. Following the 15 month course I set up as a self employed cabinet maker making bespoke fine furniture for private clients. That business is Christine Layton Furniture. My bespoke furniture is made from a mixture of responsibly sourced solid hard woods and exotic veneer. I like to make beautiful, but practical furniture. In 2017 I briefly went back to working in an office. I lasted a year after which I had to get back to my woodwork. Since then I have made more bespoke furniture, but in addition I now make smaller wooden items which I sell at craft fairs around the South East. This business is called Simply Wooden Gems. I do not have a website for this business but examples of my work can be found on my Instagram page. I recently discovered resin art and pouring acrylics. The epoxy resin combines well with woodwork. So, I am now enhancing some of my pieces with brightly coloured resin. I'm also making art with it. The pouring acrylic is a very new venture and still a work in progress.
