Margaret Jones

Tapestry Weaver  |  Visit Open Studio

Margaret's tapestry career began in 2010 when she did a short course at West Dean College to learn tapestry weaving. She never looked back and by mid 2015 she had been at West Dean College for three years and gained her MFA in visual arts specialising in Tapestry Weaving. Since then she has been busy weaving her own designs, weaving commissions at the professional studio at West Dean and organising 'Heallreaf', an international exhibition of hand woven tapestry. Margaret is among the many artists who have drawn inspiration from ancient mythologies as a thematic source, blending traditional elements with modern interpretations in her work. By harnessing a rich well of mythological influences, Margaret creates pieces with multiple layers of significance. These ancient tales of passion, ambition, greed, and human suffering continue to captivate audiences today just as they did millennia ago. Driven by the enduring fascination with unusual bodies or "otherness", the portrayed creatures raise important questions about humanity's role in nature, the value of diversity and difference, and how history shapes our understanding of natural phenomena.
