Sophie Brogden
Printmaker
I am a printmaker in Horsell, Woking. My work is inspired by the beauty and essence of flowers and foliage in their natural form, preserved individually in each print. My printmaking focusses on two areas, linocut prints and etchings with aquatint, a lengthy process which leads to tonal depth. I capture the lines, contours, details, patterns and colours within flowers in my garden, allotment and in the local landscapes. These detailed drawings are then transferred onto traditional hessian lino and each print is carefully hand carved with specialist tools. Each print is then individually printed by hand onto specialist paper. I like to incorporate signature ‘chatter’ lines in the background to capture movement and life and are unique to each print.
Within my etching prints I use tones and colours which accentuate and capture the beauty and simplicity of flowers, from large prints to smaller detailed pieces. The aquatint process creates texture as well as subtle tonal variations. I use specialist etching equipment each week in a London studio. I am a member of Ochre Print Studio, Guildford as well as having a large Art Cabin with a Rollaco press at the bottom of my flower filled garden. I am delighted to have my prints on display and for sale at RHS Wisley Gallery, at The Lightbox Gallery in Woking and also at Gallery 15 Hambledon, near Godalming.
