Jo Shepherd

Jo Shepherd - BA Hons degree in Fine Art Painting, Kingston University

Born 1967, Bishop's Stortford, Herts
I am a painter.

Painting for me is a compelling obsession, a life-long love affair with paint founded on a deep rooted desire to create.
I seek to combine elements of emotion, beauty and narrative in my work.
I am primarily interested in portraiture. For me there is nothing more intriguing to study and to try to understand than other people. Our consciousness, emotions and cognitive behaviours are key elements to what makes us human.
If I can portray any of these in a painting then I will have achieved my goal.

I have also often found inspiration in the woodland landscape around me to create vibrant, sometimes semi abstracted paintings. These are an expression of my perception of the colours and patterns I see in the trees and give me the opportunity to have fun and to play with paint, allowing it to manipulate me as much as I might try to manipulate it.
When I'm not in the studio, I work with profoundly disabled people several times a week, providing art sessions as well as occasional life drawing/painting workshops at Watts Gallery Artists village, Compton.

This year my first portrait of LUDIGO,THE BEST IS YET TO COME was selected for the RA Summer Exhibition and my second portrait LUDIGO'S STORIES has just been selected for the prestigious Columbia Threadneedle Prize at the Mall Galleries

My recent exhibition FACE to FACE was filmed and shown on the BBC South Today news.
You can view the film on my facebook page.
