Alison Ellen

Textiles, knitting and dyeing

My studio is full of colour: yarn dyeing, knitting in progress, books, and knitwear for sale. Ideas for colours and textures often come from the surrounding garden and landscape, and I have a range of designs to suit different individuals. I design jackets, jumpers, waistcoats and hats, with interest in structure and drape, as well as colour and texture, and welcome people to try them on! I also run workshops in knitting design in the UK and abroad, teaching short courses at West Dean College, and have had published four books on designing in knitting.

Ruta Brown

Jeweller

My personal vocabulary of form and texture has been developed by directly manipulating precious metals using hand tools and heat. Specialising in reticulation, I express this distinctive visual language through jewellery and small objects of silver and high carat golds. Drawn to the textural possibilities and structural limits that can be achieved when directional heat is applied to forged, folded forms, each piece is individually fabricated, resulting in a variety of intricate forms, details evoking weathered fragments of flotsam and other marine elements from the shoreline.

Justine Jenner Pottery

Ceramicist

My love of providing food for family and friends, sharing everyday and memorable moments around the kitchen table, is the starting point for all that I make - from the morning cup of coffee to the most meaningful celebrations. My contemporary tableware, thrown on the wheel using earthenware clay, is designed to show off food and drink as well as being fully functional, comfortable and tactile to use. Throwing pots on the wheel is my favourite part of making and I love passing on this skill to the huge variety of people that come to enjoy workshops with me throughout the year.

Shirley Ann Stephens

Printmaker

My medium is lino printing with oil based inks. I produce quirky bold images! The hands-on process of cutting and printing is the basis of my craft. My work ranges from framed prints to greetings cards, which are all unique and handmade. I find a lot of my inspiration from ancient traditional arts and crafts; embroidery and textile patterns are an exciting source of ideas.

Ruth Taylor

Painter

I trained as a textile designer at West Surrey College of Art and Design which has been an influence on my work in the use of colour and texture. I work in oil on canvas and board applying the paint directly on to the surface and then using combs, brushes and sticks I try to capture the English landscape, particularly the South Downs, the marks made on land by man and the effects of the weather and seasons.
