Surrey Artist of the Year
For the tenth consecutive year, Surrey Artists’ Open Studios and the New Ashgate Gallery are working in partnership to host the Surrey Artist of the Year competition, supported by the Patricia Baines Trust.
We invite you to vote for your favourite artist during the SAOS Open Studios in June. Only those who visit four or more studios are eligible to vote. You can do this by returning the voting card at the back of the brochure, or by voting online. One vote per person.
The artists with the most number of votes will be invited to exhibit their work at The New Ashgate Gallery in Farnham. Voting will then re-open to all gallery visitors for the Surrey Artist of the Year. The winning artist will be offered a solo exhibition at the New Ashgate Gallery in 2020.
To make sure you receive full details please join our mailing list.
The winning artist will receive a cash prize and a solo exhibition at New Ashgate Gallery.
How can I vote?
Many artists have come together to produce short trails of studios around their area, these can make it easy to plan a day out and to visit four or more! Once you have voted online or by post you will be automatically entered into our free prize draw.
One lucky winner will receive a £150 voucher to spend at a participating artist’s studio and a second prize winner will receive a £50 voucher to spend at Pullingers’ Art Shop.
We hope that you enjoy your visits to this year’s Surrey Artists’ Open Studios.
Last year’s winner
Catherine Warren, Surrey Artist of the Year 2018
Taking inspiration from landscape and nature, from close to her home in Farnham to the Devon and Cornwall coast and beyond, Catherine enjoys trying to capture something of the atmosphere and moment, in mainly abstract form. She is particularly drawn to colour, light and design and aims to produce paintings with energy, freedom and movement through thoughtful yet bold gestural mark making. Catherine says about the award that:
“I was absolutely delighted to win Surrey Artist of the Year 2018! I also very much enjoyed being part of the open studios event and found the collaboration of being part of a group studio a very rewarding, supportive and sociable way of exhibiting. I am looking forward to doing it again in 2019.
“I have been busy painting since, with paintings in exhibitions at the New Ashgate Gallery, as well as in the Frivoli gallery in Chiswick. Looking ahead, as part of my prize, I will be at the Surrey Contemporary Art Fair in March, followed by the Surrey Open Studios in the summer, and in the autumn a solo exhibition at the New Ashgate Gallery! It’s a busy and exciting time and I am enjoying developing my painting and seeing where the marks take me!”
