Surrey Artist of the Year
For the eighth consecutive year, the Surrey Artists’ Open Studios and the New Ashgate Gallery are working in partnership to host the Surrey Artist of the Year competition, supported by the Patricia Baines Trust.
We invite you to vote for your favourite artist during the SAOS Open Studios in June. Only those who visit four or more studios are eligible to vote. You can do this by returning the voting card at the back of the brochure, or by voting online. One vote per person.
The artists who receive the most votes from the public will progress to the Surrey Artist of the Year 2017 exhibition, held at the New Ashgate Gallery from 30 September – 11 November, open 10am–5pm, Tuesdays–Saturdays. The Surrey Artist of the Year competition is offered in partnership with the New Ashgate Gallery, Farnham and is funded by the Patricia Baines Trust.
Following a further vote from visitors to this exhibition, and a vote from the panel of judges, the winner of Surrey Artist of the Year will be selected and announced during the exhibition. To make sure you receive full details please join our mailing list.
The winning artist will receive a cash prize and a solo exhibition at New Ashgate Gallery.
How can I vote?
Voting has now closed.
Many artists have come together to produce short trails of studios around their area, these can make it easy to plan a day out and to visit four or more! Once you have voted you will be automatically entered into our free prize draw. One lucky person will win a voucher, worth £150, to spend on SAOS artwork.
We hope that you enjoy your visits to this year’s Surrey Artists’ Open Studios.
Last year’s winner
Denise Jaques, Surrey Artist of the Year 2016
Last year’s winner was Denise Jaques, who creates mixed media mosaics using a wide range of materials including glass, ceramics, metal, wire and found pieces to create shimmering mosaics for the garden, the home, and to wear.
Denise is fascinated with the journey of experimentation and excited by the unknown destination. Her work has a strong sense of colour, pattern and rhythm and often plays with the idea of movement and distorted reflections.
“Being nominated for Surrey Artist of the Year 2016 was a huge surprise. As a first time exhibitor in the Surrey Artists’ Open Studios, I was amazed by the response of the public, and totally shocked and touched that visitors took the time to vote for me.
Having the opportunity to exhibit at the New Ashgate Gallery has definitely been a highlight of being nominated. The most rewarding part of this prize is the confidence it has given me to continue and develop my work”
