Alison Ellen and Ruth Taylor

Celebrating the 25th year of opening with SAOS at Jeffreys Cottage, our 3-day open studio (with preview on Thursday evening 12th June) will be showing paintings and knitwear this year, in a garden setting, with plants for sale (raising money Phyllis Tuckwell hospice).
We will be demonstrating some of our working methods, Ruth painting, and Alison dyeing wool.
Both Alison and Ruth originally trained in textiles at UCA Farnham. Alison has run her knitting business for many years with her approach to designing through structure and using stitches for shaping. She enjoys the challenge of creating pieces that will suit different people and be a joy to wear, bearing in mind we are all different!
She shares her ideas in the UK and abroad through exhibitions, lectures, teaching and her books (these will be for sale), encouraging people to experiment with knitting and have confidence in exploring and designing.
Ruth worked with textiles for many years, and this is still evident in her work which is inspired as much by colour and pattern as it is by the English landscape.
Applying her oil paints directly on to the work surface, her atmospheric landscape paintings capture the changing seasons and the effect of the weather on the land.
’These are paintings of the images in my head, sometimes the colours and marks on the land are exaggerated, so creating an unrealistic, almost fantasy landscape but underneath is the structure and forms found in the English countryside, the coastline and in particular the South Downs’.
£5 to £1,200
