Alison Hunt, Nicola Martin Ceramics & Rachel Redfern

Two painters and a ceramicist who are all inspired by the natural world. This is the second year they have come together for Surrey Artists Open Studios to show their work.  You will find a varied gallery of artwork including paintings, ceramics and sculpture. Using a rich colour palette, they create immersive artworks that enhance interior spaces, bringing memories of the outside in.

Alison lives among trees, and the wooded landscape around her home are a main source of inspiration. Daily walks, shifting light, changing seasons, and the spaces between branches continually feed into the work.  Alison has recently completed the Professional Landscape programme at Newlyn School of Art and this has encouraged her to take her landscape paintings in an abstract direction.

Nicola creates distinctive stoneware ceramics with a strong focus on expressive glaze decoration. Her open vessels act as canvases, onto which she paints abstract interpretations of the sea and landscapes she encounters during her travels. Named ‘The One to Watch’ by ENKI magazine in 2022, Nicola continues to evolve her practice. She completed a Foundation Diploma in Ceramics at West Dean College of Arts & Conservation in Chichester.

Rachel’s artwork is varied and instinctive. Working with oils she draws on photographs, sketches and memories based on her time in nature and the impact of seasons and world events on her daily life. Rachel was a Wildcard on Sky Landscape Artist of the Year 2026 with her work featured during the first episode.  This year she will be bringing both sculpture and paintings to Open Studios giving a personal insight into the studio practice that shapes her painting.
