Annabel Roberts and Amanda Ewbank

Annabel: I make work which is usually functional – mugs, bowls, serving dishes, vases – as well as some larger vessel forms. Some of my work is thrown on the wheel using a flecked body which gives a pleasing speckle to the finished ware, but increasingly I find myself coiling larger forms. This is a deeply satisfying process involving patience and focus and allows me to develop forms with an organic character; edges undulate, pared back dishes are gently asymmetric.  My inspiration comes from the landscape surrounding my studio; misty woods, layers of lichen on rock, textures that are partially revealed in undergrowth.  I work with a limited palette of neutral colours, layering slips and glaze to give a subtle variation of surface texture.

Amanda: As an artist, I truly believe you never stop learning and I am forever curious and excited to tackle new techniques and disciplines. As a result, I work across a range of media and practices. A common thread throughout all of my work is my fascination with texture and the atmosphere it can lend to a piece. Whether that’s the thick layers of generous impasto in my oil paintings; the quality of mark making in various printing techniques or the balance of stones, metals and leather within my jewellery, it is present in all I do.
Having often visited Annabel in her studio, I have always found it an inspirational space and I am thrilled to be presenting my work beside hers in such a wonderful location.
