Little Acre Studios

Little Acre Studios is situated in the beautiful gardens of a private home. The studios comprise a children’s book author, a ceramic artist, a jewellery designer-maker, a painter, a photographer and a textile artist.

During open studios you will have the opportunity to visit each of the studios and talk to the following artists and makers (see below) see them at work, and view small exhibitions of their work which may be available to purchase or commission.

Michelle Shields – Ceramics

Clay is an abundant material with endless possibilities; a complete fascination for Michelle’s studio work in Clay Cottage at Little Acre Studios.

Michelle embraces traditional skills with contemporary digital craft techniques, from hand building, throwing, clay 3D printing to embracing robotic technology. At present she is researching North Devonshire Harvest Jugs through The Burton at Bideford Museum and Art Gallery, using their wonderful R J Lloyd slipware collection – reimagining the collection through a digital lens, until 2022. Michelle is also an educator at the University for the Creative Arts, Farnham, in the Ceramics and Glass department.
Melanie Lucas – Jewellery
Melanie makes jewellery using sterling and fine silver and semi-precious stones. Her pieces are made and finished by hand, using traditional silver smithing techniques and textured using rocks, slate and old tools.  Melanie’s jewellery is only lightly polished to retain the natural, earthy and organic look left by her texturing techniques. The stones she chooses bring her jewellery closer to the elements through their natural colours and textures.
Kim Cody – Painter
Kim will be exhibiting drawings and paintings in Willow Studio. Her work is completely non-figurative although she often uses observational drawings as a starting point. Her compositions are made up of colours, lines, shapes, tones and textures, gathered from random observations, sketches, notes and drawings made from her life and surroundings.

Ed Brydon – Photographer
Ed is a documentary photographer interested in personal connections to place, the land and natural environment, and how these are changing. He is increasingly using physical techniques to express his final work in order to create a tangible link with his projects, including print-making, books and zines. Ed will be exhibiting in Peppercorn studio.
