Penny Green at Swanworth Villa.
In my studio in Dorking I combine ceramic figures, watercolour drawings and printmaking to create a world of masquerades, blending emblems and icons from across history in a visual and symbolic journey that reflects contemporary issues. There are various thematic strands to my work, such as Wildmen and Wildwomen, marginal forest figures inspired by medieval manuscripts and woodcuts, who I see as guardians of nature, or my ‘Melancholy Men’ series based on Elizabethan miniatures, a time when melancholy was held to be a desirable state of mind. My work involves a great diversity of techniques: you will see earthenware dishes, mugs and vases which have been decorated using press-moulded additions, coloured slips, slip transferred images, stencils, sgraffito and hand painting with oxides, stains and glazes. I am a member of CPA, exhibiting last year with them at their gallery in Gt Russell Street and also a London Potters member. I studied Theatre Design at the Slade School of Fine Art, UCL and have a Ceramics diploma from the City Lit, London.
