Stephen Kinder’s Painting Studio

I have always found great comfort and joy in the landscape, and this continues to be a profound inspiration for my paintings—whether small pieces created on location or larger works in the studio. I am captivated by the ever-changing weather and seasons, which dramatically alter the character of a place. My work is a reaction to the essence of that place. The Surrey Hills and South Coast, in particular, have inspired me for many years. Landscape often stops me in my tracks, urging a response before the light or weather shifts and what I saw transforms into something else.

The way light falls across the landscape, creating mood and atmosphere, is something I find deeply absorbing. I aim to capture those fleeting moments in time. Some of these landscapes I have revisited time and again, and it is through repeated exploration and reflection that I have developed a deeper understanding of their character. I primarily work in oil paint on location, and my technique could be described as ‘loose and impressionistic.’ My work is sold both nationally and internationally, and I also take on private commissions.
