Sylvie Zimmer was born in Luxembourg and lives and works in Surrey, UK. She graduated with a BA (Hons) Fine Art from Central Saint Martins, London, in 2003, completing her degree as a mature student. Her education at Central Saint Martins established a research-led approach to painting that continues to inform her practice.
Sylvie’s work draws on history, botany, and on the study of objects associated with travel, trade, science, and daily life. It brings together fragments of the natural world with references to migration, exploration, collecting, and documentation from the 17th to 19th centuries. She is particularly interested in how plants travelled across cultures, and how these movements shaped scientific, economic, and social histories. Working primarily with fluid acrylic on canvas board and paper, Sylvie builds layered compositions underpinned by line drawing, erasure, and areas of colour. Her process allows images to accumulate while resisting narrative clarity or illustrative resolution.
She has exhibited nationally and internationally since 2003 and has worked from both commercial and home studio settings. Sylvie is currently a member of the Bluehouse Artist Collective in Esher, where she maintains a studio practice and participates in Surrey Artists Open Studios.
