Ioanna Namintraporn, The Ottershaw Potter

Potter  |  Visit Open Studio

I work with terracotta clay, producing unique, hand-built designs. My work ranges from jewellery, pots and plaques, to intricate detailed replica shoes and bags, glazed tile designs and goddesses. I have enjoyed experimenting with batik, a wax resist technique, on clay. This involves working on terracotta which has been kiln fired, glaze painted, waxed and reglazed, before re-firing. My eclectic style has been inspired by having studied both stained glass design, and Thai batik painting. Combining these elements on a clay surface with different glazes, has produced some unpredictable, yet pleasing results. The ‘Goddesses’ in my latest work are inspired by the use of clay throughout history, to fashion small objects of worship. They have been hand carved from terracotta clay and fired with iron oxides, they are made to be handled to enable a personal connection. I work in the local community and run workshops and classes for all ages and abilities. I also provide clay and a kiln firing service for ‘Pottery at Home’ creations.
