Jo Mitchell Long
Painter
Jo Mitchell Long is a contemporary artist working across abstraction, landscape and still life. Her practice is rooted in a search for how form, colour and composition can hold emotion, memory and story.
Beginning in abstraction, Jo explored gesture and rhythm as a visual language beyond representation. These early works focused on movement, layering and intuitive mark-making, building surfaces that felt both energetic and reflective. Over time, this approach has evolved into more recognisable subject matter while retaining the freedom and vitality of abstraction.
With a background in graphic design and media, Jo brings a strong graphic sensibility to her painting. Colour relationships, spatial balance and surface texture play a central role in her work, often blurring the line between structure and spontaneity. Whether working from the landscape, interiors or still life, she is drawn to moments that feel lived-in, personal and quietly narrative.
Jo works from her home studio in Surrey and her studio at Wimbledon Art Studios and exhibits regularly in London and beyond. In 2025 Jo showed at Affordable Art Fair Battersea and in May '26 she will be showing at the Affordable Art Fair Hampstead, alongside selling through selected galleries, art fairs and directly from her studio. Her paintings aim to invite the viewer into atmosphere rather than fixed meaning — allowing space for memory, feeling and personal interpretation.
